How to Check Your NSFAS Application Status for 2025
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) supports South African students from low-income households with funding for tertiary studies. If you’ve applied for 2025 or plan to, it’s important to track your application status.
📅 Reminder: The deadline to apply is 15 December 2024, as urged by Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Buti Manamela.
Step-by-Step: Check Your NSFAS Status Online
1. Visit the NSFAS Website
Go to www.nsfas.org.za. On the homepage, click on “myNSFAS Student Portal.”
2. Log Into Your myNSFAS Account
Use your South African ID number and password.
If you don’t have an account:
- Click “Create Account”
- You’ll need: ID number, a working email, and a secure password.
3. Go to Your Dashboard
After logging in, access your dashboard and click “Check Your Application Status.”
Possible Application Statuses
- Approved: You’ve been funded. You can proceed with your institution’s registration.
- Declined: Your application did not meet NSFAS requirements.
- Pending: Your application is still being reviewed.
What to Do If You’re Declined
You may still appeal the decision, but only under certain conditions.
✅ You CAN appeal if:
- There were missing documents or minor errors in your original application.
- You faced serious personal or academic challenges that affected your performance.
❌ You CANNOT appeal if:
- Your course isn’t covered by NSFAS (e.g., private institutions, postgraduate degrees).
- You’ve already exceeded the N+2 Rule (or N+3 for students with disabilities).
- You failed to meet academic standards without valid reasons.
- Issues came from your institution’s delays (in that case, contact your institution directly).
