Role Summary
Security Officers play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of correctional staff, inmates, and visitors. These positions involve supervision, perimeter patrols, searches, incident response, and maintaining order within correctional facilities.
Minimum Requirements
- Certificate: Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
- Security Certification: Minimum PSIRA Grade C and completion of a basic security officer course
- Criminal Record: Applicants must have no convictions or pending cases
- Health & Fitness: Good physical health and ability to undertake patrols and shifts
- Residency/Citizenship: South African citizen or permanent resident
- Other Clearances: Required security vetting and clearance before appointment
Key Duties
- Conduct regular patrols of facility interiors, exteriors, and perimeter areas
- Perform searches of individuals, vehicles, and cargo entering the facility
- Monitor CCTV systems and communication devices
- Respond swiftly and appropriately to security incidents or alarms
- Enforce disciplinary measures and maintain facility order
- Generate daily reports and provide incident accounts
- Assist with emergency response procedures and crowd management
- Deliver visitor orientation, screening, and access control
Conditions & Working Hours
- Shifts: Rotating daytime, evening, overnight and weekend shifts
- Uniform: Full security attire and compliance with dress policy
- Environment: Work within correctional facility boundaries
- Mobility: May involve working across several centres within a region
