PathCare Academy is inviting recent matriculants to apply for its two-year Phlebotomy Technician Learnership, which offers a solid pathway into healthcare diagnostics and laboratory services.

Programme Details

  • Qualification: Further Education and Training Certificate – Phlebotomy Techniques (NQF Level 4)
  • Duration: 2 years – January/February 2025 to December/January 2027
  • Training Locations: Classroom training offered in Cape Town, Bloemfontein, or Pretoria; practical training in various PathCare labs nationwide and in Namibia
  • Contract Type: Two-year learner contract with monthly stipend

What You’ll Learn

  • Anatomy and physiology basics and laboratory ethics
  • Laboratory safety protocols, including infection control
  • Techniques for collecting blood and non-blood specimens accurately
  • Use of professional equipment in pathology and transfusion services
  • Development of professionalism, confidentiality, and service excellence

Upon completion, learners sit for the HPCSA board exam. Successful candidates can register as Phlebotomy Technicians, enabling work in pathology labs and blood transfusion services


Entry Requirements

  • Education: Matric with Life Sciences (≥50%) plus Mathematics (≥40%) or Math Literacy (≥60%)
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English; basic Afrikaans skills are beneficia
  • Personal Qualities:
    • Strong work ethic and reliability
    • Ability to work under pressure and follow detailed procedures
    • Professionalism and respect for patient confidentiality
  • Physical Requirements: Willingness to work shifts, including after hours, and handle blood

Selection Process

The application process is competitive and includes:
